The Darkest Sunrise by Aly Martinez ~ Sarah A’s Review

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.

“You’re pregnant.”

“It’s a boy.”

“Your son needs a heart transplant.”

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.

Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.

“He’s gone.”

For ten years, the darkness consumed me.

In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.

“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

I don’t even know where to start with this book.  It was that intense.  Nothing I can say, no words held within the English language can adequately describe The Darkest Sunrise.  This is the kind of book I want to read for the rest of my life.  Dark, horrible, wonderful, extraordinary, EVERYTHING.  This book is everything I look for in a novel.  It tore me open and left my heart weeping.  The blood leached from my mind, body, and soul as the words carefully constructed on those pages flayed open the deepest parts of me.

I have read several excellent books this year, but none of them hold a candle to this book.  The heart-wrenching emotions brought about while reading The Darkest Sunrise are something I rarely experience while reading.  These weren’t your average sadness, anger, devastation; these emotions were beyond soul deep and I felt them in every cell of my body.  I know what devastating loss feels like and Aly Martinez was able to expertly find the strings that control those emotions and play them unlike many authors are able.

The Darkest Sunrise is a duet, so the story is not complete in this one book and it could not have been written any other way.  This book was constructed so flawlessly, so wonderfully, I can’t imagine trying to include more story in this book.  And all of those things, those acute feelings and experiences that made up The Darkest Sunrise, need time to come to terms with, to organize and understand.  I am dying to get my hands on The Brightest Sunset, but I know that the slow burn of waiting for it will make reading it all the more amazing.

You won’t want to miss this amazing series!

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
