The Truth About Lies by Aly Martinez ~ Sarah A’s Review

Truth: From over a thousand miles away, I watched on the screen of my phone as two men murdered my wife. And I was helpless to save her.

Consumed by hate and rage, I spent four years running from my memories.

Until a shattered woman gave me a reason to stop.

Cora lived in a nightmare, but through sheer force of will, she’d turned it into something beautiful. She had a smile that could pierce the darkest soul. And with one glance, she shredded mine.

Lie: I was only there for a fresh start.

Lie: I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

Lie: There was nothing I could do to save her, either.

But that’s the thing about lies—you never know who to believe.

I don’t know where to start with this book, except I am on tenterhooks waiting for the conclusion of this story in The Truth About Us.  This book took me by surprise in a really great way, I can usually see twists and secrets coming a mile away, but there were a few things that absolutely shocked me in their reveals.

The Truth About Lies started with one of the most heartbreaking scenes I’ve read in some time and kept me on a roller coaster of emotion from that moment on.  The plot of the book was unique, and I was blown away by how wonderfully refreshing it was while still holding the familiarity of romance themes I love.  Ms. Martinez also weaved complex secrets and connections throughout the book without ever giving any hint as to what she was doing.  By the time I reached the ending, I was completely blown away by everything that happened and all the things I’m anticipating in The Truth About Us.

One of the best elements of this book was the characters’ backstories and how poignantly they mirrored each other.  Their shared pain made the connection between Cora and Penn much more intense than it may have been otherwise.  The fact that they’d both suffered the types of loss they had and cared so deeply for the people in their lives made them special and their relationship beautiful and inevitable.

The Truth About Lies is the first book in Aly Martinez’ Truth Duet.  These books are a single story written in two volumes and must be read to get the full picture.  This book is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Cora and Penn.

Aly Martinez has continually impressed me with her gritty, emotional stories.  These duets she keeps publishing have all slain me.  She so effortlessly blends the dark with threads of light that form a beautiful picture of the fine line between good and bad, hope and hopeless, and, occasionally, love and hate there is no doubt that these stories come from her soul.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
