NEW RELEASE!! Timid by Devney Perry ~ Sarah A Review

Willa Doon has always been shy. Her quiet demeanor was something she’s always embraced. That is, until Jackson Page moves to town. The one man she desperately wants to take notice struggles to remember her name.

Year after year, Willa stands by, watching as the bartender slash playboy drowns his demons in beer and sex. Then one night, he shows up at her door, suddenly aware that the girl he’s seen around Lark Cove is now a beautiful woman.

Except what he doesn’t remember is that this visit isn’t his first. They spent a night together once before. A night he’s forgotten, thanks to a bottle of tequila.

A night that crushed a timid girl’s heart, and set a broken man on the path to heal them both.

For as many heartbreaking moments in this book, there were five times as many beautifully touching instances to make up for them. Each Devney Perry book I read is sublime, and I would be hard-pressed to tell which my favorite was as they each have touched me deeply in their own ways. Timid delivered everything I’ve come to expect from Ms. Perry and more.

After reading Tattered, I knew Willa and Jackson’s story was going to be phenomenal, and it delivered more than I could have ever anticipated. They were such polar opposites in almost every way I was expecting a highly angsty story – and we did get moments of that – but I was so happy that Timid focused more on building up their relationship and Willa and Jackson coming into their own. Their connection was so strong from the first moments they spent alone together; there was never any doubt in my mind they belonged to one another.

Willa surprised me, especially after what we’d seen of her in Tattered, she’d been so insecure and quiet I wasn’t sure if it was a result of her surroundings or the whole of her personality. Watching her evolve from that shy, nervous girl to the person she was by the end of Timid was sublime. She’d shown flashes of who she could be in the beginning, but once she fully came into her own.

Jackson had called to me in Tattered since we learned parts of his story through Thea I knew whatever he projected to the world was to hide the broken boy who lived inside him. Willa saw that and knew he was more than anyone gave him credit for, then helped him to discover the man she already knew she was. His growth arc in this book was phenomenal, and he proved himself to be everything Willa thought he was and everything she deserved.

Timid is the second book in Devney Perry’s Lark Cove series. These books are interconnected standalones and can be read independently. The timelines crossed over a little, and if you’re reading the entire series, Tattered should be read first. Timid is written in dual first-person perspective, narrated by Willa and Jackson.

Devney Perry has yet to let me down with her books. They all pack an emotional punch and deliver sweeping love stories with fascinating characters and great growth arcs. Her writing is always spot-on and consuming. I love how she takes popular romance tropes and puts her own spin on them to make them feel entirely new and unique.

I scooched my chair in toward the table, trying to put a little more space between Jackson and me, but he wasn’t having it.

He put both hands on the back of my chair, then leaned in close. “Hi, Willa.”

“Uh . . . hi.” I shivered at the heat from his chest on my bare shoulders.

Why was he standing so close? My parents were right there. Our table was one of four tall, square ones in the center of the room and there was plenty of space between tables.

Plenty. P-L-E-N-T-Y.

But was Jackson using any of that plentiful space?

No sirree. He stayed pressed against the back of my chair, like there were only three inches of usable space behind him, not three feet.

My skin prickled he was so close. I tried to nudge my chair forward again but it barely moved. Sweat beaded on my temples and I pulled in a shaking breath.

Jackson’s woodsy, rich scent was everywhere. It overpowered the stale beer, pizza and peanuts, and I inhaled a deep breath, unable to resist.

Sexy Hot Forest. That’s what they’d call his cologne.

Thea Landry has always known her place in modern-day society. It’s somewhere just above the trash can her mother dumped her in as a newborn but below the class where much comes easy. With her tattered shoes and bargain-bin clothes, her life has never been full of glamour.

So when a rich and charismatic man takes interest, she doesn’t fool herself into thinking their encounter is anything more than a one-night stand. Months later, she’s kicking herself for not getting his phone number. Or his last name. She’s given up hope of seeing him ever again.

Until one day, years later, Logan Kendrick waltzes into her life once more and turns everything she’s built upside down. This time around, she won’t make the same mistake. She’s going to fight to keep him in her life—not for herself.

But for their daughter.
