“Friends to lovers at its best– a sweet indulgence I couldn’t put down!” – R.S. Grey, USA Today Bestselling Author

Baking Me Crazy, the first in the romantic comedy Donner Bakery Series of standalones, from Karla Sorensen is available now!

I’m Levi Buchanan, and until five years ago, I thought the legend of my family’s curse was a load of crazy, Southern nonsense.

No curse can make you fall in love at first sight. No curse can force a true, deep, passionate, all-consuming love that will haunt you all the days of your life.

Then I met Jocelyn Abernathy and I realized how completely wrong I was.

The problem is, Jocelyn guards her feelings like well-armed soldier. She’s the most beautiful, stubborn, infuriating woman I’ve ever met. Every time she talks, I want to kiss the living daylights out of her. But I can’t.

Because when we met, she didn’t need true love. She needed a best friend. And that’s what I’ve been to her… for five years.

But when Jocelyn meets a handsome stranger her first day working at Donner Bakery and she lets him buy her a dill pickle cupcake, I realize with ominous regret that I may have missed my window with my best friend.

If I can’t get her to see past our friendship, my new curse may be to watch the love of my life move on with someone else.

‘Baking Me Crazy’ is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book#1 in the Donner Bakery series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Excerpt:

“Besides, this is my best friend perk. Shouldn’t I get perks in baked goods?”

She cut me a look. “You’ve been getting those perks for two years, Buchanan. Don’t even pretend you didn’t put on a solid ten pounds that first year I started baking.” Quite pointedly, she looked at my stomach, which we both knew was covered in muscle.

“That’s rude,” I mumbled under my breath. I flexed my bicep. Nero licked my elbow since it was right in front of him. “Yeah, ten pounds in my left arm maybe.”

The noise she made roughly translated to you are ridiculous. She made that sound at me a lot. Of course, the sad truth of the matter was that I was ridiculous.

Not once in the past five years had my feelings lessened for her. I had just learned to live with them. In my junior year of undergrad, I was taking a class on brain pathology in injuries, and a man came to talk to us about how he learned to live without his right arm after it was amputated.

He told us about how, even years after he lost his arm, his brain still triggered sensations to the limb that was no longer there. The adult brain, in particular, struggled to reorganize after the loss of a limb, and given that four out of five amputees suffer from phantom pain symptoms, some of which were incredibly debilitating, it was a lesson that stuck with me.

I wasn’t fool enough to think that me loving Jocelyn was on par with a man who’d lost his arm, but something about the way he talked plucked at a chord inside me. Sometimes my brain struggled to remember that we were just friends.

She’d never dated, never even hinted that she wanted to. She’d never given me a longing glance. Never stared at my mouth like she wondered what it tasted like.

But my hands never, not once, stopped wanting to reach for hers. My fingers always, always itched to dig into her crazy hair and see what the curve of her scalp felt like.

My brain knew what this relationship was, but sometimes, the signals it sent to the rest of my body didn’t always match up with the truth of our situation. We worked out together a lot, Joss and I, and when she got frustrated with the limitations of her body, I always wanted to wrap my arms around her.

I wanted to pull her into the curve of my body, absorb her dissatisfaction into my skin, and carry it for her. That was the irony when she made noises like that.

She had absolutely no clue how ridiculous I really was.

Whitney’s 3 Star Review:

I went into Baking Me Crazy knowing two things:  1. The Smartypants books were going to have their own voice and not try and mimic Penny Reid’s writing style.  2. I had zero expectations since I haven’t read Karla before.

Confused as to why I mention Penny Reid?  If you’re unsure about the premise of this book, it’s part of the Smartypants World which means it is set within the fictional worlds created by author Penny Reid.  In the case of Baking Me Crazy, we are in Green Valley, TN (aka Winston Brothers series world).  Karla’s books feature characters never seen in Penny’s books with a few cameos from the Winston clan.

The book started off promising as I immediately liked Levi and Joss. Levi is your typical dreamboat hero but he’s also super sweet and has a sensitive side.  Joss, his BFF, has a lot of spunk and her physical disability (she is wheelchair bound but can walk at times) brings an eye opening view into what it’s like to be ‘different’.  This is a pretty typical friends to lovers romance. No surprises and nothing particularly outstanding about it.  And that why I only gave this 3 stars. It’s fine but it’s not great, just ok.  Part of the book felt boring and while I didn’t skim through anything, I was tempted.

Baking Me Crazy seems to be getting a lot of positive feedback so maybe I’m in the minority by not loving it??  I will say that Levi has an older brother who interests me and I’d be happy to read his story should Karla write it.  Overall, if you’re a die hard Penny fan, this will likely interest you.  Since I haven’t read Karla before, I can’t speak to how it compares with her norm.

About Karla Sorensen:

Karla Sorensen has been an avid reader her entire life, preferring stories with a happily-ever-after over just about any other kind. And considering she has an entire line item in her budget for books, she realized it might just be cheaper to write her own stories. It doesn’t take much to keep her happy…a book, a really big glass of wine, and at least thirty minutes of complete silence every day. She still keeps her toes in the world of health care marketing, where she made her living pre-babies. Now she stays home, writing and mommy-ing full time (this translates to almost every day being a ‘pajama day’ at the Sorensen household…don’t judge). She lives in West Michigan with her husband, two exceptionally adorable sons and big, shaggy rescue dog.

“This is Penny Reid at her finest.” — L.B. Dunbar, author

Beard With Me, an epic and breathtaking story from New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Penny Reid, is available now!

KDP_BWM.jpg

No one is better at surviving than Scarlet St. Claire and making the best out of circumstances beyond her control is Scarlet’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, she’d be the last person on earth, hermitting like a pro, singing along to her CD Walkman, and dancing like no one is watching.

Scarlet is clever, Scarlet is careful, and Scarlet is smart . . . except when it comes to Billy Winston.

No one is better at fighting than Billy Winston and raging against his circumstances—because nothing is beyond his control—is Billy’s specialty. In an apocalyptic situation, he’d be the first person on earth to lead others to safety, overcome catastrophe, or die trying.

Billy is fearless, Billy is disciplined, and Billy is honorable . . . except when it comes to Scarlet St. Claire.

‘Beard With Me’ is the origin story of Billy Winston and Scarlet St. Claire (aka Claire McClure) and is just the beginning of their epic love story.

*Scarlet*

“Do you want me to leave?”

Yes. That would be best, a wise voice said between my ears.

So of course I inhaled deeply and said as calmly as I could manage, “I thought we were going to go get firewood.”

“Okay. Good.”

“But then,” I blurted, flustered and irritated with myself for not speaking wisdom, “You should go. You can’t tell me carting firewood back and forth between your house and here is how you want to spend the last of your Thanksgiving weekend.”

“I didn’t say it was.” He began making his way up the incline.

“But you just said—”

“How about we make a deal.” Billy dropped the kindling next to my little woodpile, dusting his hands off on his pants. “I’ll cart the firewood, and you sing.”

“You want me to serenade you while we carry firewood?”

He smiled, slow and easy as he walked to me and reached out his hand. On autopilot, I accepted it and allowed him to help me up.

As soon as I was standing, his gaze moved from my hairline down to my nose, lips, and then chin, saying quietly, “I’ll take a serenade from you anytime.”

Thunk ka-thunk. That was my heart. It had been doing the thunk ka-thunk quite a lot around him. I ignored it, because what else could I do?

“And you’re not carrying the wood.” He tugged on my hand, pulling me out of my daze and past my tent.

“I will too carry wood.” Struggling to find my bearings, I stumbled after him. “I can carry logs just fine.”

“You’ll carry a log.” Billy fit his fingers between mine, pressing our palms together and grinning at me like he was waiting for me to argue and he couldn’t wait.

Snapping my mouth shut, I glared at him.

“Nothing to say?”

Maintaining my glare, I walked next to him. I wasn’t being led anywhere I didn’t wish to go. Not anymore. He wasn’t talking me into anything else.

“That’s an awfully mean look, Scarlet.” His grin grew, his brutally attractive eyes glowing happily as he peered down at me.

“Well, you deserve it. Always trying to tell me what I can and can’t do. I’m not arguing with you about this. I’m carrying as much wood as I want and you can take your stupid, chauvinistic opinions and shove them up your pretty-boy ass.”

Goodness. Where had that come from?

Billy’s steps faltered and his mouth fell open, his eyebrows rising high on his forehead. He stared at me, looking shocked as hell. And then in the next moment, he threw his head back and laughed. But he did not let go of me, instead bringing my knuckles to his chest as his deep, rumbly laughter filled the empty spaces between the trees, surrounding us.

Crushing me.

Yes. I was well and truly crushed as I could only watch Billy Winston laugh, desperately basking in the image of him so delighted and relaxed. I had the odd sense that his laughter also filled the empty spaces inside of me, the neglected, vacant rooms, and even a few places that felt brand-new, like he’d created them.

All that noble honesty he carried around like a boulder abruptly lifted, revealing him. Just him. Carefree and young and happy. Someone he might’ve been if his burdens hadn’t been so heavy, his responsibilities so broad.

It lasted only a minute, maybe two, maybe less, but I had the sense of being caught afterward. Billy’s laughter had receded, but he’d spun a web while I’d been staring at him, holding his hand.

His grin became smaller and he bit his bottom lip, his gaze dropped to my mouth. “You think I’m pretty?”

“You know you’re pretty,” I said, bizarrely out of breath, rattled, needing to anchor my focus to a tree beyond him and waging war against the heat climbing up my neck to my cheeks. Oddly, my eyes stung. I blinked.

His attention was still on me. I felt it, but I didn’t dare look at him. I couldn’t handle one of Billy Winston’s intense stares right now. He’d probably use my scattered wits to his advantage, talk me into something I shouldn’t want to do, and then I’d be kicking myself later.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, his voice deep with concern, all trace of his earlier humor gone.

I huffed, trying half-heartedly to steal my hand back from him. He didn’t let it go, instead taking my tugging as a signal to step closer, filling my vision.

“Scarlet—”

“Are you ever going to teach me how to play the guitar?” I closed my eyes.

He didn’t answer right away, and I felt him hesitate, his mind work before he muttered, “It’s only been a week.”

A quality to his voice made me think he wasn’t answering the question I’d asked, but rather he was reminding himself that it had only been a week since we’d struck the deal.

Was that only last week? Why does it feel like so much has changed?

Then he said, “Don’t be angry.”

“I’m not angry.” I was muddled, my head and heart hurt, I was incredibly confused, but I wasn’t angry.

The air shifted and I felt him move closer. A second later, the fingers of his free hand were at my ear, tucking my hair behind it, his fingertips lingering at my neck, sending wave after wave of goose bumps every which way. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t swallow. I couldn’t think. Every nerve in my body strained toward him and I didn’t understand it. What is happening?

“Have you ever been kissed, Scarlet?”

Whitney’s Five Star Review:

Beard with Me has been a controversial topic amongst Penny Reid fans for a while now. As the backstory for Billy and Claire/Scarlett’s romance, we KNOW things are gonna get ugly. This is NOT a romance novel. Sure, it has the wit and charm we associate with Penny but this book is not her typical romcom fare.

Personally, I don’t think this is a book to read unless you’ve been involved with the Winston series and are invested in the characters. Previous stories have hinted or downright told us some of the terrible things both Billy and Claire went through growing up. Beard with Me gives us all the details. Honestly, it’s really not surprising and some of the sadder things that happen (mostly violence of some kind) are not detailed. Yes, there are triggers but nothing that IMO is going turn a true fan away.

What I will recommend is this: 1. Read this book right before Bread Necessities so you can go straight into your HEA 2. Read this book and then do a Winston re-read so you remember that all the siblings turned out just fine and all they overcame

I adored the book. The glimpses of Cletus, the twins, Ashley and Roscoe were so dang cute. This wasn’t a good time for Jethro but we do get a little insight into what was going through his head while he was a Wraith prospect. We also get to know Ben. Ah, Ben. Another controversy amongst my book friends. I like Ben although many people don’t. He’s just a lot different from the Winstons and a bit selfish. Basically, he’s the total opposite of Billy in many ways. Not a bad thing, just different.

Just a reminder… this is not a love story. Billy and Scarlett are barely friends for part of the book and quickly grow to care for each other. The timespan for this book is really only a few weeks. And yes, the end is heartbreaking but there are so many beautiful moments that it’s totally work the book hangover. Billy is the most honorable, least selfish person and Scarlett has a truly amazing and positive outlook despite her awful childhood.

Whether you read this now or after Beard Necessities, please read it!

Whitney’s Five Star Review

Oh man, Samantha Young is at her best again with Fight or Flight. If you are into the hate to lovers trope, this needs to be at the top of your TBR because it’s done to perfection.

Ava and Caleb’s (aka the Bastard Scot) meet cute is anything but cute. He’s a jerk and she’s a bit high strung. Since this is told only from Ava’s POV, we soon enough realize why she’s acting a bit crazy and that, despite this, she is a really good person. There are some self worth issues which I think gives her character a lot of depth considering the circumstances of how she grew up and history with past relationships.

Caleb is a man of mystery for most of the book. He is a total anti-hero for a while because he’s not very nice. Yet, the reader can glimpse enough of him behind the mask he puts on to not totally hate him. Now don’t get me wrong, he is NOT your Prince Charming guy we get a lot in romance novels. At his best, he is very flawed. But what I love about this story is how much these two characters make each other better, help each other work through their flaws and how each is able to see the world with a new perspective because of their love. And the super steamy sex scenes don’t hurt either. Ha.

There’s definitely some heat to the book as their relationship is essentially two people who hate each other but physically can’t deny their attraction so they sleep together. Often. It never takes over the story and there’s plenty of plot driven material to really keep you interested. I also thought a couple of the side characters were developed just enough to add a lot of depth to the story and I’m hoping (fingers crossed) that Ava’s best friend gets a book. Possibly with Caleb’s brother. And no, this is NOT a spoiler so keep your panties on.

Anyway, I breezed though this in one day. I’d consider it a low/moderate on the angst scale because has some humor but also deals with some serious subjects. I did shed a couple tears but I’m a leaky faucet when reading or watching Disney movies so take that for what it’s worth.

Bottom line, if you want a contemporary romance that’s easy to read and sexy, give this a whirl. Can’t wait to see what Samantha does next!

BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW – Dr. Strange Beard by Penny Reid

BT_BANNER.jpg

Dr. Strange Beard, an all-new standalone in the bestselling, romantic comedy Winston Brothers Series by Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Penny Reid, is available NOW!

DRSB_LARGE.jpg

Hunches, horse races, and heartbreak

Ten years after Simone Payton broke his heart, all Roscoe Winston wants is a doughnut. He’d also like to forget her entirely, but that’s never going to happen. Roscoe Winston remembers everything—every look, every word, every single unrequited second—and the last thing he needs is another memory of Simone.

Unfortunately, after one chance encounter, Simone keeps popping up everywhere he happens to be . . .

Ten years after Roscoe Winston dropped out of her life, all Simone Payton wants is to exploit him. She’d also like some answers from her former best friend about why he ghosted her, but if she never gets those answers, that’s a-okay. Simone let go of the past a long time ago. Seriously, she has. She totally, totally has. She is definitely not still thinking about Roscoe. Nope. She’s more than happy to forget he exists.

But first, she needs just one teeny-tiny favor . . .

Dr. Strange Beard is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a stand-alone, and is the fifth book in the USA TODAY bestselling Winston Brothers series.

Excerpt:

“Simone, this is not one of our adventures from when we were kids. This is not finding Blithe Tanner’s cat. These men are murderers, drug dealers, thieves.”

“I know.” Boy oh boy, did I know. I didn’t want to be here anymore than he did. I was frightened. Yet allowing Roscoe to be taken on his own hadn’t been an option. “I can handle myself, and I can provide backup for you, if you need it.”

Roscoe gripped my shoulders. “Nothing can happen to you, do you understand?” His words were emphatic, his gaze disoriented, desolate, frantic. “If anything happens to you, I’ll . . .” He swallowed, apparently unable to finish the sentence.

My heart twisted to see him like this. I wished there were some way to show him what I could do, what I was capable of, so he would stop seeing me as a liability.

Well, why can’t you?

“Huh.”

Now there was a thought.

Stepping out of his grip, I walked backward to the other side of the room and took a deep breath. “Okay. Come at me.”

He blinked. “What?”

“I want you to come at me.”

“Simone,” he seethed.

“Come at me, bro.” I did that little movement with my fingers, my palm turned upwards. “Come at me or I’ll start singing again.”

“I’m not doing this.”

“Fine.”Frustrating. “I’ll come at you.”

He stood there, features set, looking raw.

Moving quickly forward, staying light on my feet, I faked right and then went left, hooking him behind the back of his leg, catching his arm to twist behind his back, and sending him to the ground—face-first—with a thud.

I winced as he grunted, my knee at the base of his spine, his arm restrained behind his back. “Sorry! But you wouldn’t listen to me.” Leaning forward, I whispered in his ear, “Are you okay? Did I hurt you?”

Roscoe’s back and shoulders rose and fell with an expansive breath, like he was about to respond, but in the next moment he’d spun his legs to the right, leveraged my knee on his back to throw me off-balance, and slipped his wrist from my hold.

In my defense, my grip had been lax as I was purposefully trying not to injure him.

The next thing I knew, Roscoe had me pinned to the ground, air knocked out of me, him hovering above, and my gun digging into my ribs beneath my shirt. He’d been careful to subdue my legs, likely so he wouldn’t end up with a bruised ballsack.

His stare more probing than angry—which I took as a good sign—he said, “I didn’t teach you that. Where’d you learn that?”

Even though I was still coughing, I smiled and rasped, “Since college, take judo.”

He nodded faintly, his eyes moving between mine, looking concerned. “Are you okay? Did I hurt you?”

“No.” Endeavoring to catch my breath, I said, “I took it easy on you because I didn’t want to hurt you either, but I’m an asset, not a liability.”

“You’re definitely an asset.” Roscoe frowned, his gaze dropping to my mouth. “And a distraction,” he said, his voice rough.

“I’m a distraction?” I asked, my words still breathy.

I bucked, but he held me fast.

“Yes. . .” His stare turned inward. “You are most definitely a distraction.”

Even though I’d had plenty of time to recover and we’d been holding still for close to a minute, I was still breathing hard. This might have been because of my lingering irritation. Or, maybe it was because the length of Roscoe’s lean body was lying on mine. He held my hands on either side of my head, our faces even, his mouth just inches away.

Was it insane that I hoped he kissed me?

Yes?

No?

Let’s go with no.

He gave me his eyes again and I saw something there, a battle. He looked undecided, at war with himself, straining against something I couldn’t see.

“Roscoe?” I whispered.

Roscoe closed his eyes, and I thought he was going to let me go, but in the next second his lips descended, capturing my mouth in a tender kiss.

I moaned.

I kissed him back.

That’s what one does when Roscoe Winston kisses one. Moan and kiss. Repeat. Because not doing so would be a travesty.

His hold on my hands slacked, his fingers seeking and threading with mine. He settled his hips between my legs, his form relaxing. The weight of him was different now, warmer somehow. At least I felt warm. I also felt cherished as his tongue sought mine, again tenderly, stroking, causing my abdomen to twist and tighten into delicious knots.

He broke the kiss and a protest died on my lips as his mouth trailed down my jaw to the sensitive skin of my neck, sucking, licking, savoring me. What had felt warm and cherishing heated, and my hips tilted reflexively as he nibbled on my ear, cradling his rapidly growing erection.

We both gasped as his hips rocked in an answering yet inelegant movement. It felt perfect and essential in the moment.

“Oh God.” His hot breath spilled against my jaw, a ragged sigh. “What are we doing?”

“I don’t know, but don’t stop.”

Whitney’s Four Star Review

Ah, Dr. Strange Beard. Aka Roscoe. Let me back up. Ah, Penny Reid. Probably my favorite author and the Winstons are one of my all time favorite series.

That being said, this book is maybe by least favorite. I still enjoyed it a lot. A lot, a lot. But I just didn’t absolutely love it. The time hop at the beginning, which I was expecting, just felt awkward. For a lot of the book I just felt I was missing something even though I wasn’t. I guess I love these characters so much and think of them as my fictional family that missing out on five years just felt wrong. I totally understand why the author did it and I agree it was needed. I mostly got over it the more I read but it still just never felt quite right.

The only other problem was that I didn’t connect as well to Roscoe and Simone (mostly Roscoe) as I have with the other characters in the series. Roscoe is amazing, so sweet, so caring, and totally imperfect. He’s a bit more spoiled than his siblings and being the youngest has a much different outlook on his family than we’ve seen before. So while I really did love him, I just didn’t connect as well. Simone was a little easier, especially the more I read. She’s got an amazing mind and her inner monologues were great. The reality of how she felt about Roscoe was fun as we watch her struggle and then finally realize she loves him.

All the glimpses of the other characters were very special moments. For previous fans, you can see who has kids and kinda catch up with what’s been going on. There are some real shockers around a few family members that will lead directly into either Billy’s book or Cletus and Jenn’s cozy mystery series. A few smaller/side storylines are left open for this purpose, including the parts about *gag* Darrell *gag*. Cause yeah, he plays an integral role in this book.

I’ve seen this being marked as a stand alone and to be honest, I completely disagree. While technically Roscoe and Simone’s story begins and ends here, there is a long backstory which builds more and more as the series goes on. This book is definitely NOT where you want to start the series. If you don’t want to read them all, at least start with Beard Science and read from there. Although I 200% starting with Beauty and the Mustache and then reading all the books in order.

Dr. Strange Beard has a lot of tension, a fair amount of angst (I did cry a bit around the end), some danger, and since it’s Penny, some laughs as well. This book felt more serious than some of the others but the author’s signature charm and style is still abundant. If you’ve loved the series, this is definitely a must read. Even if you don’t love it as much as the others, you’ll get some valuable info leading into Billy’s books and catch up with your favorite family!

REVIEW AND TOP RECOMMENDATION – Speakeasy by Sarina Bowen

Sometimes you fall for Mr. Right. And sometimes for Mr. Right Now…

May
Did you hear the one about the girl who walks into a bar and catches her live-in lover kissing someone else? No? You’re the only one in town who missed it.

Luckily Alec is there to wrap me up in strong arms and carry me out the door before things get too ugly. And that’s not all Alec is good at. Our unexpected chemistry makes him the perfect rebound guy.

Alec
I should know better than to hook up with my rival’s little sister, but the fiery look in May’s eyes really turns my crank. She needs cheering up, and I’m just the guy for the job.

It’s not like I’ll fall in love. Not even after a string of scorching hot trysts, and the realization that we’re good at the same things: wild nights and familial disappointment. I don’t do love, never have, never will. So this is the perfect arrangement, for both of us.

Nobody would approve, but nobody has to know…

Whitney’s Five Star Review

Gah!  Just take my heart and hand it to Alec.  I thought grumpy Griff was my favorite True North guy. Until now.
Sarina is one of my top authors and I will read anything she writes.  But Speakeasy has a spot in my Top Favorite Sarina Books (which is quite impressive, I assure you).  We’ve met Alec in previous books and although he is kind of what expected, he’s so much more.  He’s silly, supportive, serious when needed, a bit wounded, and sooooo sexy.
May is coming off a bad breakup with her girlfriend and there is definitely some back and forth here about her sexuality. Not in the sense that she is confused.  She identifies as bi but it’s been a long time since she dated a guy so of course there is some hesitation on her part and on Alec’s as well.
The friends with benefits vibe lasts for a while but you can see them getting more and more entangled emotionally. I loved every minute of their love story and wish I could read it again for the first time.
Sarina weaves a fresh story with lots of great characters every time but it at the top of her game with Speakeasy.  I do recommend you read the series in order if you want to read them all as it gives great insight into character development.  The descriptions of locations, buildings, etc make feel like I’m living in the story.  I have zero complaints.
Highly recommended!

BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW – Only Him by Melanie Harlow

Only-Him-SBPR-BT-Banner

MHOnlyHimBookCover5x8_MEDIUMOnly Him, an all-new sexy and emotional second chance romance from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow is available NOW!

MHOnlyHimBookWrapFB

Sometimes your first love deserves a second chance…

He was my first crush, my first kiss, my first everything.

But I’m not a lovesick teenager anymore, and I’d never let that cocky troublemaker break my heart again.

So when he shows up out of the blue asking me to have dinner with him “for old time’s sake,” I say I will. After all, it’s been twelve years, and I’m stronger and smarter than I was back then.

Except…he still does something to me. He’s got those eyes that make me weak, those hands that drive me wild, and a body I can’t resist—especially once I see the tattoos. It doesn’t take long for our trip down memory lane to go from sweet to sizzling.

We’re just as good together as we were back then—better, even—and I’m willing to give the only man I’ve ever loved another chance.

But he’s got to tell me the truth.

* * *

All I wanted was to see her again. Tell her I’m sorry. Make her smile.

Okay, that’s a lie. I wanted to do more than that—a lot more. But I know she’s better off without me, and I promised myself I’d behave.

Except I’ve never been much good at keeping promises…or my hands to myself when I’m around her.

I can make her laugh, I can make her cry, I can make her body surrender to mine in ways that neither of us could have imagined back then. I can—and I do—love her more than she’ll ever know.

But I can’t tell her the real reason why I’m here.

And I can’t stay.

Excerpt

Maren glanced back at me, more puzzled than ever, but she started up the cement stairs. I couldn’t take my eyes off her legs in front of me. Her calf muscles were insane from all the ballet training. I remembered how flexible she’d been and felt my dick start perking up.

“In addition to all the history I just gave you,” Aiden said, his voice echoing off the walls, “this hotel was also the site of a certain prom a few years back.”

All of a sudden, Maren stopped moving and looked down over her shoulder at me. “No way.” The stunned, joyful expression on her face was worth every penny I had to pay to make this happen.

Goose bumps rippled down my arms inside my jacket. I smiled at her.

Her jaw dropped, and she continued up the stairs. At the top, Aiden moved ahead and opened the door to the rooftop. “Ballrooms were not available tonight, but when Dallas asked if you could have the roof to yourselves, I had to admit no one had booked it. In fact, no one has ever even asked to book it.” He laughed.

Maren stepped over the threshold onto the rooftop. “Dallas is definitely one of a kind.”

The three of us moved away from the door, and I saw the table that had been set for us, complete with white linens, flower centerpiece, and candlelight. Luckily, the air was warm, and the wind was soft. The sun was still setting beyond the skyline to the west, and to the east the Detroit River was visible; a little to the south was the Ambassador Bridge, and beyond the river, Canada. The view was breathtaking on all sides.

After turning around in a full circle, Maren looked at me with shining eyes. “Dallas. This is incredible.”

“You’ll have your own server for the night, and he should be up shortly,” Aiden said, checking his watch. “I should get back downstairs. Dallas, you have my cell if you need anything. Maren, good seeing you again, and I hope you enjoy your evening.” He gave us a smile before heading back to the stairwell door.

As soon as he was gone, Maren turned to me. “I cannot believe you did this.”

I shrugged. “I felt pretty bad when you said you’d missed the prom because of me. I figured I owed it to you.”

She laughed and rolled her eyes, which were filled with tears. “You didn’t, but whatever. I’ll take it.” Opening her purse, she hunted around in it for something. “God, I don’t even have tissues. I didn’t know you were going to make me cry.”

“No crying allowed at the prom. And I hope it’s okay I’m wearing jeans.”

“It’s fine.” She sniffed and closed her purse. “I’m not that dressed up either.”

“You’re perfect.” Our eyes met, and the air between us suddenly felt full of hope and possibility. In any other circumstance, I’d have kissed her.

But I couldn’t do that tonight.

“Oh, I almost forgot.” Reaching into the inside pocket of my jacket, I pulled out a wrist corsage. “Sorry if it’s a little smashed. I had to get rid of the plastic container to hide it from you.”

She giggled and held out her arm. “That’s okay. It’s beautiful.”

“Good.” I slid the elastic band with three deep red roses attached to it along with some other green stuff onto her wrist. “I told the lady at the florist to make it a prom corsage. Pretty sure she thought I was crazy. Or creepy.”

“You might be crazy. But I love it. Thank you for this.” Then she rose up on tiptoe and pecked my cheek. When she lowered her heels, she stood there for a moment, her hand on my arm, her mouth so close I could have simply tipped my head down and my lips would be resting on hers.

My heart stumbled over its next few beats. I wanted to do it so badly, but I’d promised her I’d behave. I’d promised myself I’d behave. There were so many reasons why I shouldn’t be here tonight, standing so close to the only girl I’d ever loved, tempted beyond reason by her legs and her lips and her laugh and her eyes and her ability to make me feel like I fucking mattered in the universe.

What was the right thing to do?

If only—

The door from the stairwell opened, and we moved apart.

ONLY HIM SECOND CHANCE AN TEASER

Whitney’s Four Star Review

Only Him is a great second chance romance and although it’s part of a series, it can be read as a total stand alone.

The previous book featured Emme, and our heroine is one of Emme’s sisters, Maren. Maren was the kind of hippy, healthy, sister and I loved getting to know her. All of the sister scenes really stole the show for me. I don’t have sisters and I don’t know if the author does but it feels like she captured a real relationship here.

Dallas is Maren’s first love from high school who disappeared and returns to her life suddenly for what was supposed to be a very brief catch up. But of course, their off the charts sexual tension wins and the back and forth ensues. I won’t go into plot details but Dallas has issues and although some of his actions got on my nerves, he did win me over and successfully stole my heart by the end.

The end of the book makes all the angst worth it.  Watching these two fall in love again or rather realizing they are still in love was heart warming.  And the author ALWAYS has amazing side characters.  We get some appearances by old favorites and a few new ones as well.

As always, Melanie’s writing is witty, fast paced and intriguing. She sets the scene really well for all of her settings without being overly detailed and I always love her female characters.

I think I *might* be the most excited for the next book! Can’t wait to see Melanie work her magic again.

BLOG TOUR AND REVIEW – The Varlet and the Voyeur by LH Cosway and Penny Reid

BANNER-BlogTour.jpg

The Varlet and the Voyeur, an all-new standalone in the USA Today bestselling Rugby Series from Penny Reid and L.H. Cosway is available NOW!

Cover

He kept his salacious secret for years. But soon, everyone is going to be reading about it in their morning paper…

THE VARLET (and the VOYEUR)

William Moore is a long way from home. A farm boy from Oklahoma, he’s now the most well-respected member of the Irish rugby team. But appearances are often deceptive, and Will isn’t the clean-cut, all-American good-guy everyone imagines him to be. He’s got a secret, one that will tarnish his reputation forever.

THE VOYEUR (and the VARLET)

Josey Kavanagh is a self-proclaimed mess, but she’s finally get her shi…uh, act together. She’s set her sights on becoming a veterinarian, but there’s one teeny tiny road bump. Her living arrangements are coming to an abrupt end, leaving Josey homeless and in need of a job to pay her way through college.

THE PLAN

What he needs is a companion to keep him on the right path.

What she needs is an apartment with free rent.

Will is convinced Josey will make the perfect companion, since she’s brutally honest and basically ‘just one of the guys.’ Josey is convinced she can ensure Will doesn’t succumb to his voyeuristic proclivities by keeping a scrupulous eye on him.

Except, what happens when the varlet is tempted by the voyeur, and vice-versa?!

Perchance something very, very volatile. And vexing.

The Varlet and the Voyeur is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the 4th(and last) book in the USA TODAY bestselling Rugby Series.

Excerpt:

*Will*

When I saw how spotless the shared living space was, I allowed my curiosity to get the better of me and peeked my head into her bathroom, Rocky dancing around my feet as I entered the space. The counters were covered in woman-products, but the marble surface and sink were free of water spots, and the glass of the shower had been wiped clean.

I glanced at Rocky. He glanced at me. Bemused, I chuckled to myself, about to turn back to the door, and that’s when I spotted it.

A dildo.

A big, Pyrex dildo.

With ridges.

In the shower.

I froze, blinked, and I stared at it, my brain sluggish. Oddly, I had to remind myself to breathe. Likely because I was . . .

I was—

I was shocked.

I shook myself, tearing my eyes from it and rubbing my chest where an odd kind of pang was spreading mild warmth up my neck.

But why was I shocked?

Why should I be surprised?

Despite my never seeing her that way, Josey was a woman and women have needs.

Don’t they?

I hadn’t grown up around women—any women. My mother died when she had my youngest brother. My grandmother died before I was born. I had no sisters. We lived on a farm, way out in BFN Oklahoma.

Girls—women—and their bodies were sacred lands of the unknown to us Moore boys.

Unbidden—completely unbidden—an image of Josey flashed through my mind’s eye. Her full lips parted, her big eyes closed, causing her thick black lashes to catch droplets of water before they dripped over her sharp cheekbones. Her head would be lolled back as shower spray melted bubbles of slippery soap, sliding down her bare skin as they dissolved. Her legs would be parted, and maybe one hand would be braced against the wall of the shower while the other moved in a steady rhythm.

Holding that huge, glass dildo.

I swallowed a sudden rush of salvia and, unable to help myself, I leaned closer to the sex toy, examining it and comparing its size against my own.

I was bigger.

But not by much.

And for some reason, this realization made me instantly hard.

Crap.

Of course I knew Josey was a woman, but until this moment, I’d never really thought of her that way. Not even the tampon-mountain drove the point home. Up until this point, she was someone I liked as a person, someone who made me laugh, who was smart and compassionate, someone around whom I felt completely comfortable. A good—no, a great companion.

She was still all of those things, except—

Except now I’ve pictured her naked.

Whitney’s Four Star Review

The Varlet and the Voyeur was a lovely addition to the Rugby series by Penny Reid and LH Cosway.

I gave this four stars because I really did enjoy it but it felt a little different from the first three books. Perhaps a little stiffer, a little slower. Hard to say really but I found myself being slightly disappointed only because I think this is first book of Penny’s I haven’t given five stars.

For an author duo, Penny and LH do a fantastic job. The chapters flow seamlessly from POV to POV and each character is well developed.  I always find myself wondering which author writes each POV because they have similar feels.

I didn’t connect as well to Will as I do most of the characters even though I did like him.  I liked him more as the story went on but I just kind of felt his backstory didn’t mesh well or perhaps his backstory is what caused me to not feel as connected.  But he is seriously a great guy and perfect for Josie. Our heroine, Josie charmed me right away and is seriously the Queen of Awkward.  She says the wrong things, does the wrong things and I loved her for it.  I felt bad that some of the other characters… it’s not that they don’t like her, more that they don’t like being around her much.  Either way, I thought she was developed well and loved all of her pieces of the story.

Even though things start kind of slow, once the story really gets going , the pace is a little faster and I liked the last half much better. The sexy times are whoa… sexy! Of course there is a decent amount of laughs, snark, and a great sprinkling of former characters.

I definitely love this series, the authors and can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

BLURB

The night I met Greer Palmer was no coincidence.
The plan was perfect.
Everything was in place. All I had to do was get her attention and the rest would take its course.
What I didn’t plan was my reaction the first time she spoke.

“Are you okay?”

Three little words…
That’s all it took for her to steal my breath and shatter every thing I’d expected.
She was supposed to be a spoiled socialite, a pampered princess, an elite heiress— anything other than the striking beauty that blew my misconceptions to pieces.

One kiss and I became obsessed.
One night and I became addicted.
One month and she became my world.
Suddenly, my plan wasn’t so perfect.

To her, I am sunset kisses, whispers of seduction, and promises of forever.

It’s all a lie…

I’m Lawson Hall.
My name and reputation speaks for itself as one of the most successful architects in the industry. Conceited, arrogant, egotistical, ruthless— I’ve earned it all.
In reality, I’ve bided my time, done my job, and waited my turn.
Now is my chance.

Greer thinks we met by accident, but she’s wrong.
Once the lies are exposed, will the truth be enough?

BLOG TOUR, REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY – Marriage of Inconvenience by Penny Reid

MOI BT BANNER.jpg

Marriage of Inconvenience, an all new romantic comedy standalone in the USA Today bestselling, Knitting in the City Series by Penny Reid, is available NOW!  This is my TOP READ of the year! — Whitney

MOI copy

There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson. . . and yes, she is *that* Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy.

Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules, expectations, and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity—and heart—all in one piece.

Except, what happens when Dan O’Malley isn’t as indifferent—or as trustworthy—as she thought?

Excerpt:

Staring at his chin, because I couldn’t quite lift my eyes any higher, I cleared my throat. “Should we get ready for bed?”

“Sure,” he said, his voice a rumble. Dan’s eyes were on me, I felt the weight of them.

My hands came to the hem of my skirt and I hesitated, feeling winded for some reason. Sneaking a glance at him, I immediately wished I hadn’t. His gaze was watchful, but it was also unmistakably hot in a way that seemed at once both avaricious and accusatory. The vice tightened around my lungs.

Kiss him! Just freaking kiss him! You want numbered steps? Fine. You kiss him- check. He kisses you back- check. Then you make out- check. Check the boxes.

I licked my lips, balling my hands into fists at my sides again, preparing to follow my hasty list.

But then he said, “Undress me.”

My breath caught. On instinct, my eyes lifted and collided with his in much the same way our bodies had collided at the top of the stairs just moments ago. Jarring. Startling. Thrilling. This time I couldn’t look away because this time I was falling. He made no move to catch me.

“What? What did you say?”

His eyes narrowed, which served only to increase the intensity of his gaze from smolder to inferno. “Take my clothes off.”

I stared at him, licking my lips again, and shaking my head. That wasn’t one of my steps.

Lifting my chin, I moved to kiss him. He leaned to the side, evading me even as his eyes dropped to my mouth.

“Take off my shirt and I’ll give you a kiss.” He’d used his naughty-secret voice.

An explosion of heat erupted in my belly, and now I was hot all over. I couldn’t figure out if the heat was embarrassment or arousal or both.

He didn’t give me a chance to figure it out. His hands lifted and he undid his cuffs; then they moved to the top button of his shirt.

“You better take over,” he said darkly, “or else you’re not getting that kiss.”

Whitney’s Six Star Review

I’m probably going to cry writing this. I teared up when harassing Penny about how perfect this book is. I teared up when the book hit my Kindle app.  The end of an epic series is always bittersweet and I knew it would be tough because of how this series and Penny have touched my hear.  But this is possibly the best series conclusion I’ve ever read. I am wholly fulfilled. Well, almost. Ha. I mean, I’d love more extended epilogues in the future or even spin offs from some of the other characters. There were a few tiny unresolved questions I had about secondary characters. And by secondary, I don’t mean any of the KITC couples. I mean truly secondary characters. But Penny is nothing if not sneaky. So I’m betting we will see some of them again.

If you’ve not read the Knitting in the City series, you are missing out. I feel like I have a set of best friends in these characters and getting to know each has been a pleasure. Kat has been the most mysterious of the girls and she has a lot of complexity to her character. She’s vulnerable in many ways and also strong. Mental illness is touched on through Kat’s family and I can tell Penny did a lot of research to ensure it’s portrayed accurately.

Ah Dan… Penny warned us that he cusses. A lot. He certainly does but it’s so fitting with his character, I didn’t even really notice beyond a couple of pages. He’s full of heart and I can’t imagine a person more suited to give Kat the patience and gentleness she needs and deserves.

Everything about this book is just beautiful. The wit, the banter, the friendships, the sexual tension… all perfect. Penny is a writing wizard and I’m looking forward to see how she amazes me next. My top read of the year so far!
